The sound design of The Orchard

caruu | news | Friday, October 31st, 2008

So the halloween contest is over and the one I helped with the sound design for, won.

Congratulations, Lafawnduh with The Orchard

.

Considering it was my last sound design in the machinima community for awhile, I thought I go out with a bang..sort of speak. I decided to give detail to the sound in ways I don’t really bother doing for free. Because it takes time and effort.

So I spent some extra time in detailing stuff like: rain hitting the walls, rain falling on the edge of the doorway and dripping into puddles, farmhand walking is barefooted in sound as well, footsteps for the main character to be accurate to the surface  his walking to - like for instance the stairs being wood and that it is in fact stairs and some more.

All in all, I don’t really do contest movies anymore but I wanted to do horror for a change and I got not only a great story and visuals to work with, but also someone who was careful and respectful to the art of sound and my recent personal dismay.  So it was worth the extra time I spent on it.

Glad he won.

Book

caruu | news | Sunday, October 26th, 2008

I first wanna thank everyone for their great support in my recent disarray.
Thank you all.

Now to jump right into it. For over 4 years, I’ve been writing a book called:  “The Darkness Core”

it’s a fantasy story but different than what you are used to; there is no orcs, no elves, no dragons or directly magic.
I’ve set up since the start of creating it that I wanted to be original as I possibly could. Not dragging the redundancies you read or see anytime you come in contact with the genre fantasy.

It started as a movie project between me and a friend and then died after many times to revive it. Then I met my love and I wanted to finish the story for her. I wrote and added ideas and concepts for a looong time but recently, I was contacted by a company who heard about the idea and wanted to animate it into a movie.
Problem was that neither the world nor the story was even remotely in place.
So they lost interest after awhile and told me to contact them when the book was done.

Now that the person I loved for many years took farewell, I find myself in a giant abyss but I feel the need to finish the story and the world for her sake, and to keep myself from going crazy. And yes the book is going to be published worldwide.

The world in the book is called Novokee and is as large as three of our own Earth. Onto the world are three races that is simply the movers and the shakers. Sure there are many other races, but these three are the ones that stands out for many reasons;

The Varanmà (Most human like)

Icon of the Varanma

The Varanmà are simply what you would call human, they are a race that looks like humans and would behave like humans. They differ within language, religion\philosophy, calendar and ect.
I’m trying to make them feel human but change everything else. The Varanmà is a race gone through many conflicts and suffered a civil war that broke the race from unity into several Clans. Only their largest city survived the war and is considered by all Varanmà to be the capital of their race. Within Varanmà is what you would be close to call a king; Amon is the status and name given to the male rulers and Amus for the female. Their status is referred to as Tak: “master”, so males it would be Tak-Amon and female, Tak-Amus.

The current ruling Tak, is trying to unite the race into one civilization instead of being a spread one.

Here is a picture of Teraadoh, one of the main characters from the Varanmà side.

Teraadoh

 The Emìanoral (Aka Emìan)

Icon of the Emìanoral

Considered the most potent and pious of all races are the Emìanorals. (or simply referred to as Emìans.)
This race was notorious for their bloodthirst and enslaving the Varanmà, until one them, Maal’cain; brought them into peace and philosophy, by introducing them to their godess Cykeela whom they talked with through a massive tree called Juugon. The race created an order of warriors and masters of the Tam’ay power which was revered even by enemies: The Orochnorian order.

The Emìanorals are creatures that by age turn into stone. Their skin is hard as rock and upon them are crystals that exude an energy called the Korem. The crystals which exudes the purest and is the source of their power is called Tam’ay and is at their shoulders. Through them they use it to manipulate other energy based things such as fire and water but to avoid the whole “magic” kinda thing it is more elaborated than that.

Here is a picture of an Emìan; Zeledon  which is a main character of the story

Emìanorals

The Carummerion (no picture of their icon or profile yet)

Out of all the races, the Carummerion (which is the race I got my nickname from) put their place in the world through their ingenuity.  Masters of technology and most peaceful of all races, all their creations are built to provide and  help and through their religion they believe in not doing harm. They see natural death as a reward and consider administration of death highly forbidden. Due to the fact that the other races been reverse engineering their creations into weapons, the Carummerions started to hide away into their secret city: Dygonel and no longer provided technologies to the other races. It’s been so long since they last showed themselves that the other races started to believe their were all dead. But recent events proved them to be alive but changed as they recently started to attack  the Varanmà.

I spent most time with this race than all the others as it was hard to imagine how they would look like, their religion, language and history.

Hopefully, many of you will be interested in reading the book and hearing more about it. When it is published, I can’t tell as I am still writing it. But I am very far into the book and the majority of languages, philosophies and races are done. The artwork is done by Sara Forlenza and the entire book will have lots of artwork.
The languages, I’ve created myself and a guy who works as a linguist is making sure that I follow all the rules.

Anyway, that’s what I want to share for now. I hope you enjoyed some of it.

Leaving the Scene of Machinima

caruu | news | Thursday, October 23rd, 2008

In these few days there’s been a struggle going on. My heart has been crushed as my best friend and love just left me.
I feel very sick and nauseous at the moment, and has been ever since I got the feeling it would happen.

So I need to free up time and get myself put together before I can continue on. So I’m leaving the scene of machinima for awhile after october. Most of you will understand, a broken heart is not something nice.

I will finish the projects I got going but after that. It is going to take awhile to come back.

Take care, Glenn X. Govan aka Caruu

Radio is back online

caruu | news | Wednesday, October 15th, 2008

                                                                                            Hey, Listen!

Inspirational radio is now back online, now with three times as much content. Not only do we now play Epic music found in movie trailers.
We now play music found in video games, movies and unlicensed artists like Nathan Allan Pinard.
Nearly everything we play(that which is not by agreement rarely but sometimes play) has gone through studio agreements and the like.
We also got a IRC channel where we are working on getting song request possible.
Join in Irc.Quakenet.org #InspirationalRadio

We also got some guests doing station ID’s: Drewbie from oblivious films, Moomoney from machinima.com and Selserene creator of In For A Penny: Part One "On All Eight"

. If you wanna be a part of the radio and create a station ID. Then don’t hesitate and send it to Carummerian*at*Gmail*dot*com. You don’t have to create effects and add music in the background and such. I’ll do it for you. The words: ” Inspirational Radio” is mandatory in it.

Upcoming for the radio is a podcast involving machinima reviewing, audio tips and creation ideas, interviews with machinima makers\voice actors\ music composers found in the machinima community and of course people doing it for a living.

Be apart of the ressurection of the radio. :)

On other news, the halloween contest have gotten me several requests by many people to voice for and I am looking forward to it.   The sound package for footsteps is also going.

With that, I bid you farewell for now.

Mega Footsteps package -Preview

caruu | Packages | Tuesday, October 14th, 2008

Been lots of releases lately as I am dealing with the fact I am going away soon, doing sound designs for a video game :)

But before my leave, I wanted to fulfill some promises which was to release some sort of sound package.
So I’m gonna do the one package I hate most: Footsteps.
Footsteps are normally foleyed within a studio by foley artists, which replicate the sounds the characters interact with  like for instance objects and\or people (putting a sword in their scabbard, horse saddle riding, kissing and of course footsteps).

The reasons I hate footsteps, is because they take an incredible amount of time to get right.
And I never find myself using a sound library for it, but actually record the sounds myself to get the most accurate sound I can.
This can be massively time consuming and I like it best left to foley artists, but sometimes even I gotta put on some high heels and pretend I’m a woman. (Which has left me with sleepless nights and hours of showers)
Obviously, you wanna use a female to do the foley to get the correct foot pressure. But my better half is not exactly…willing.

Anyway, the sound pack will be big in size, as it will be wav files (I am not changing that so get a friend with a good download speed and burnable DvD’s - Doing this for free so take it or leave it)
It will contain these surfaces: Water, Dirt\Earth (might include gravel…might not), Wood, Concrete, Stairs and Snow.
They will be in: Leather, Chains, Plate and Normal.
And be in both walking and running.
For each element, motion and foley, there will be only one track for them, meaning that there is many steps in one file but only for that specific foley type;
Like Earth-chains-running = One file - and Earth-Chains-Walking = One File.

You will have to split them up yourself.

But I’m not gonna leave you just empty handed;
here is a preview of the running on dirt which should already give you some help.

Dirt Running Preview Package

Rest of the song package with a callous message

caruu | news | Sunday, October 12th, 2008

Not long ago I released a small music package, it was some dandy pwetty music with dedications to Jabbersquawky; Selserene and her Drews cat which sadly passed away.

Here I’m back again with the rest of the songs, which are more experimental and dark. There is a happy ending song as well to evaporate the emo feelings, coursing through your veins like razor sharp thoughts with not one iota of healing. Harken to me, administers of pain and dwellers of despair!!!!! *echoes out*…if you are gonna cut yourself..cut the right F’in vein and save us the damn trouble to do it for you….jesus

Sound Package

Recommendations!

caruu | news | Sunday, October 12th, 2008

I’ve added a sidebar with links of things I recommend you check out. Specially the one on how to not piss me off.
All you gotta do is to not do any of those cliche’s and I won’t have to down rate your movies in anger and rickrolling frustration.

Recording software, tutorials, mixing and sound design software is there for you to check out.

Enjoy

Music package release

caruu | news | Saturday, October 11th, 2008

Here is a small music package from me, with peaceful music: Peaceful Piano

You can use them for what ever you wish except anything that gives you any sort of revenue.
enjoy :)

It has come to an end…

caruu | news | Thursday, October 9th, 2008

So it happened. The one thing I was expecting to happen but hoped never did; My hard drive crashed and died.

I had music, sounds and lots of entertaining and promising upcoming projects on it that are now vanished and gone for all of time. The good news is that the majority of my sounds are safe on seperated hard drives but the bad news is that I had also some new recorded and processed sounds on the drive that went dead. I had to format it and reinstall windows. Now comes a long and ardous task on installing all the softwares and updates to the hardware.

I’ve gone from happy to emo, but the razor blades are kept by the better-half of me.
